I love this kind of dessert because there’s very little prep involved. You melt the butter, mix a simple batter, layer everything in the baking dish, and let the oven do the work.

Let’s Make Easy Canned Peach Cobbler

  • Add the Melted Butter

Pour the melted unsalted butter into your baking dish and spread it across the bottom.

It doesn’t need to look perfectly even.

Start with melted butter in the bottom of the baking dish.

  • Make the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Pour in the milk and vanilla extract if using.

Whisk until the mixture becomes smooth and pourable.

Add the milk to the dry ingredients.

Whisk until the cobbler batter is smooth.

  • Pour the Batter Over the Butter

Pour the batter directly over the melted butter.

Do not stir the butter and batter together.

Keeping the layers separate is what helps create the characteristic cake-style cobbler texture as it bakes.

Mix the batter and pour it over the melted butter.

Pour the batter over the butter without stirring.

  • Add the Peaches

Arrange the sliced canned peaches over the batter.

Pour over about half of the reserved peach syrup.

Sprinkle the cinnamon and nutmeg over the top if using.

Arrange the canned peaches over the batter and add the spices.

  • Bake Until Deeply Golden

Transfer the dish to the oven and bake according to the temperature and baking time from your tested recipe.

The finished cobbler should have a deeply golden brown top, with the peaches and syrup bubbling around the edges.

Add the peaches and cinnamon, then bake until golden.

Bake until the topping is golden and the peaches are bubbling.

  • Let It Rest

Remove the cobbler from the oven and let it rest briefly before serving.

The fruit underneath will be extremely hot when it first comes out, and a short rest also lets the syrup settle slightly.

The Kind of Peach Cobbler That Practically Makes Itself

This is my favorite kind of easy dessert.

The melted butter goes into the baking dish first, followed by the simple flour-and-milk batter and then the canned peaches.

And then you leave the layers alone.

As everything bakes, the batter rises around the peaches while the butter creates those rich golden edges.

The peaches stay soft and syrupy underneath, while the top becomes browned and slightly crisp in places.

Why You Don’t Stir the Layers

This is a cake-style peach cobbler, so the butter, batter, and peaches are deliberately layered rather than mixed together.

As the cobbler bakes, the batter rises around the fruit.

That’s what creates the rustic surface you can see in the finished cobbler — some areas are deeply golden cake, while soft peaches remain visible in others.

The melted butter also works its way around the edges and helps create those darker, richer sections around the baking dish.

So once everything is layered, resist the temptation to stir it.

What to Serve with Peach Cobbler

Vanilla ice cream is easily my favorite thing to serve with this cobbler.

The contrast between warm peaches, buttery golden topping, and cold melting vanilla ice cream is exactly what makes peach cobbler so good.

You can also serve it with:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Lightly whipped cream
  • A small pour of cold heavy cream
  • Fresh peach slices
  • Hot coffee
  • Black tea
  • A light sprinkle of cinnamon

King Arthur Baking also suggests serving peach cobbler warm with ice cream or whipped cream, which keeps the topping simple and lets the peaches stay the focus. See King Arthur Baking’s Classic Peach Cobbler.

The version in my photos is served warm with vanilla ice cream, and that’s still the way I like it best.

FAQs

Should I Drain Canned Peaches for Cobbler?

Not completely.
For this recipe, use the peaches together with about half of the syrup from the can.

Can I Use Fresh Peaches Instead?

Fresh peaches don’t contain the same syrup as canned peaches, so they will change the amount of liquid in the cobbler.
For the most consistent result, I recommend using canned peaches as written.

Why Is My Peach Cobbler Runny?

A hot peach cobbler will naturally look juicy straight from the oven.
Let it rest before judging the texture.
If it remains excessively liquid, check that you didn’t add more peach syrup than the recipe calls for.

Why Didn’t My Peach Cobbler Rise?

Check that your baking powder is fresh and that you used the full 2 teaspoons.
Also make sure you didn’t stir the butter, batter, and peaches together after layering.

Should I Stir Peach Cobbler Before Baking?

No.
Pour the batter over the melted butter, arrange the peaches over the batter, and leave everything layered.
